At Source of Life Ministry International, Inc., our commitment to education and community empowerment is deeply personal. I was raised by parents who never had the opportunity to complete high school but understood the immense value of education. Although they couldn’t directly guide me and my brother through every academic challenge, they made sure we had the resources we needed to succeed. Our neighbors also stepped in—offering guidance with subjects like mathematics—and their support made a lasting difference in my life.
Those experiences taught me the power of community support and the importance of giving back. I would not be where I am today without that help, and I believe every young person deserves access to the same care and encouragement. That belief has inspired our organization’s efforts to create opportunities for underserved and first-generation students, helping them explore careers in science and healthcare while receiving the mentorship and guidance they need to thrive.
To carry this mission forward, Source of Life Ministry International, Inc. is hosting a one-day Healthcare Research Workshop on December 7, 2025, in Brooklyn, NY. This hands-on program invites high school students to learn directly from scientists working in healthcare research. Participants will explore how research improves community health and how they, too, can contribute to solving real-world problems that affect the neighborhoods they call home.
Why Programs Like This Matter
Access to quality STEM education remains uneven, especially for students from underserved communities and first-generation college aspirants. Many bright young people grow up without exposure to what a career in healthcare research looks like—or the guidance of mentors who can help them navigate that path.
For first-generation students, the journey can feel uncertain. They often carry the hopes of their families while trying to discover opportunities that haven’t always been visible to them. This workshop provides that crucial first step—showing them how science connects to everyday life and how their curiosity can lead to meaningful change.
Our goal is not just to teach students how research works, but to help them understand the health problems affecting their own communities and inspire them to become part of the solution. When students recognize how research relates to challenges such as asthma, diabetes, or limited access to healthcare, they begin to see that their voices and ideas can drive real progress.
Workshops like this one help bridge that gap by:
- Introducing students to research early, nurturing curiosity and critical thinking.
- Empowering first-generation students to see themselves as future scientists, doctors, and innovators.
- Building confidence through hands-on experiments and teamwork.
- Connecting students with professionals who can serve as mentors and role models.
- Encouraging community awareness, showing how science can directly improve health outcomes in underserved neighborhoods.
- Promoting diversity in science, ensuring that tomorrow’s discoveries reflect the needs and voices of all communities.
By exposing students—especially those who will be the first in their families to attend college—to real research experiences, we’re helping them imagine a future where they not only succeed academically but also lead efforts to solve health challenges that impact their families and communities.
