How to Become a Security Guard in New York

Getting started in the security industry in New York State is straightforward. You must be at least 18 years old and have a clean criminal record. The first step is completing an 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course, which is required before applying for your license through the New York State Division of Licensing Services.

Next, you’ll go through the steps to obtain a security guard registration card, which includes fingerprinting and submitting a license application. Within 90 days of completing the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment course, you must also complete a 16-Hour On-the-Job Training (OJT) course. These courses are offered by Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS)-certified security guard training schools. Security guard licenses are valid for two years.

To keep your license active, you must take an 8-Hour Annual Refresher Course each year.

New Grant-Funded Program Offers Free Security Training and Support

We’ve recently partnered with the small business LASI Security Company, Inc., which was awarded a NYS Department of Labor Reemployment Training Grant (RTG) to provide free security guard training for eligible candidates. In addition to training, the program covers expenses for fingerprinting, license application, fire guard certification, and offers support with interviews and job placement.
